“Kivenpuoleinen” (Sided Stones), Svinhufvudinkatu, Lahti Finland, 2023, artist Jaakko Heikkilä @jaakkoheikkila sculpture composition on facade, various types of natural stones and stainless steel.

The project started with an open competition in 2022, from which the jury selected Heikkilä’s “Kivenpuoleinen” as the winner. One-third of the artwork was completed in 2023, while two-thirds is expected to be completed by late 2024.

Locality is emphasized in the artwork’s main material, as the naturally rounded stones were collected by the artist around Lahti region. The polished stainless-steel motifs create a contrasting relationship with the stones, making the artwork appear differently depending on the light and the time of day. Besides the individual stones, the inspiration from nature can be seen in the compositional randomness, somewhat reminiscing a night sky with distant stars.

Working as an architect, Heikkilä is interested exploring the relationship between space, architecture, landscape, and art. He feels the built environment is a starting point, that both inspires and limits the possibilities of implementation art in public space.

Jaakko Heikkilä (b. 1995) graduated from the department of architecture at Aalto University in 2022. Working at NOAN Architects, “Kivenpuoleinen” was his first entry in an art competition and the first public artwork realized. Since 2022 Heikkilä has finished second in two professional public art competitions in Finland.

The stainless-steel motifs were forged by blacksmith Kristian von Pfaler.

“Sarastus” Karakalliontie 1, Espoo, Finland 2023, artist Anni Kinnunen @kinnunenanni 15,6 m x 12 m, printed facade panels and 3:30 long audio available via mobile device.

Kinnunen often explores line between natural and artificial by using fine-art photography as her primary medium. Her highly polished photographs often seem artificial or unrealistic but are thoughtfully staged events without any image manipulation. Through her work Kinnunen reflects our times, where altered reality has become the norm and is considered the truth.

Kinnunen continues to combine nature, artificiality, and the split-second momentariness in her first public artwork. A living orchid captured in a moment where a pigment cloud of a spray-paint hits it, delicately presents the idea of impermanence of nature with human interaction. The simple and beautiful idea leaves room for interpretation, while being connected to broader questions of today.
The artwork is designed to appear differently in different times, as the morning and evening sun temporarily warms the artwork, during the wintertime it’s the artwork that brightens the surroundings. The title “Sarastus” (Dawn) refers to the intermediate state we experience at the changing moments of light and darkness.

The accompanied audio is by musician Pentti Dassum. Created with an oscillator and corrupted old reel tapes, the simulated nature sounds combine into one alternative nature experience with the visual part of the artwork.

Anni Kinnunen (1978) is a visual artist living and working in Oulu Finland. Working with photography, video, and installation, she has exhibited works in galleries and museums around Finland, across Europe, and in Japan, China, Russia, Canada, and the United States. Her works are included in several institutional collections in Finland.

The project received a “a percentage for art from building costs" -grant from @taikegram.

“Maria Jotuni” (1880-1943) Maria Jotunin tie, Helsinki, Finland 2023, artist Maaria Jokimies @maariajokimies, 17 m x 10 m, façade paint on concrete.

We were commissioned to create a portrait of Maria Jotuni. A well-known Finnish playwright and writer who’s sharp and humorous depiction of people, love, marriage and power structures of genders caused controversy that resonated all the way up into the Finnish parliament in the beginning of 20th century.

We decided to propose the project to Maaria Jokimies. In her previous artistic practise, Jokimies has been exploring the life of her own generation and friends, by intertwining everyday experiences like happiness and carelessness with anxiety stemming from the unsustainability of the privileged 21st century young adults.

Jokimies started the project by investigating Jotuni’s life, writings, work methods and the few existing photographs. She decided to focus on Jotuni in her early career, when they were roughly the same age. With a friend as a model, they started to work on the pose and settled on relaxed young writer emanating defiance and self-confidence. Jokimies decided to paint the face in a strong shadow to illustrate the controversies that surrounded Jotuni’s work during her career. The colours Jokimies picked from the surrounding buildings and area.

The artwork is the first large scale painting and the first public artwork from Jokimies. An accolade to a significant writer from a different time and different world, over 140 years after her birth. Maaria Jokimies (b. 1992) is a visual artist living and working in Helsinki Finland. Jokimies received her Master of Fine Arts from Finnish Academy of Fine Arts in 2022.

“Ratavarren aarre” (Trackside Treasure) Jaksonkatu, Lahti, Finland 2022, artist Tatu Tuominen @tatu_tuominen, five-part, various size, etching on concrete.

While planning the artwork, Tuominen got excited about Finnish railway history and its significance for the site in question. The first railways were built in Finland at the end of the 19th century. Not only people and goods travelled along the tracks, but they were highways of information and cultural exchange – and the station buildings themselves were the cultural centres of the community. In fact, city of Lahti was born due to the construction of the railways.

While visiting the archives of the Finnish Railway Museum @rautatiemuseo, Tuominen found a beautiful architectural watercolour drawing of the now lost, second railway station of Lahti. Designed by architect Knut Nylander, the station was built in the 1870's. This picture was the source for the artwork, as Tuominen sampled fragments from it, that were subsequently photomechanically etched onto the surface of the concrete elements in the moulding process.

These images are located around the housing block in realistic size and offer a rare glimpse into the city’s history for the building’s residents and passersby.

Tatu Tuominen (1975) multidisciplinary artist living and working in Helsinki Finland. Tuominen received his Masters from Finnish Academy of Fine Arts in 2006 and has since held various exhibitions from Helsinki to Berlin and Shanghai. Besides his artistic work, Tuominen works as a lecturer of printmaking at the Art University’s Academy of Fine Arts Helsinki.

In his artistic work, Tuominen often explores different realities, different times, and different places that he then interleaves as his own representations of existence. “Ratavarren aarre” is a natural continuum into this approach and his previous artistic work.

“Käännekohta” (“Turning Point”), Oulu Finland 2022, artist Eloise Gillow, 22,7 m x 11,4 m, façade paint on concrete.

Eloise Gillow @eloisegillow is a visual artist from the U.K. She has studied classical painting in Barcelona Academy of Art and works on canvases and murals in public space, bringing attention to our connection to each other and the natural world.

The project was part of the official Oulu European Capital of Culture in 2026 program @oulu2026official. Rajakylä was chosen as the location for the artwork through a vote by the residents of Oulu @cityofoulu and Eloise Gillow was selected as the artist through an open call that attracted 530 applications from 64 countries.

Gillow spent the August of 2022 living in Rajakylä, meeting with the residents and hearing their experiences of the area.

She observed that the neighbourhood is in a moment of transition. Instead of treading the same habitual paths, the residents of Rajakylä are actively turning around and choosing a new path forward for the whole area, leaving behind its old reputation. This action is driven by their strong sense of community and connection to the surrounding nature since the neighbourhood sits between forests, streams and the sea and is interwoven with trees throughout.

“The birch tree, the Finnish national tree, is particularly present in Rajakylä. Being the first to grow leaves in the spring, it symbolizes new beginnings, cleansing and light in traditional Finnish mythology. As individuals, as a neighbourhood, and as a society, again and again, we have the choice to choose the path we take and sometimes we encounter a turning point”.

The artwork has been transferred to Oulu Museum of Art public art collection @oulunluuppi.

“Ylös, alas ja ympäri” (Up, Down and Around) Joensuu Finland 2022, artist Tuomas Korkalo, 12,30 m x 12,60 m, façade paint, aluminium composite plates with industrial grade coating.

Tuomas Korkalo @tuomas_korkalo is a visual artist living and working in Rovaniemi Lapland. Besides working as a visual artist, Korkalo has curated exhibitions and held various positions of responsibility in Finnish art organizations. In 2021 he was awarded by the Lapland’s art committee for his prevalent and extensive work in field of arts.

Working primarily with watercolours on canvas, Korkalo has since expanded his field of work to environmental art and into the built environment. In his latest abstract works, Korkalo displays his interest in early 1900’s Bahaus and Russian avant-garde movements.

Korkalo himself says that as an artist, he takes huge responsibility about the artwork he is creating into public space. “Usually, I create my artwork and leave. The artwork is then left to the residents to live with for years or even decades to come. When creating murals, I want to create artworks that fit well into the architecture. Artworks that give added value to the surroundings and can stand the test of time”.

In the recent years, we have created several artworks near the centre of Joensuu. The outdoor gallery’s latest additions from @tuomas_korkalo and @lauratimantti are accompanied by previous works from @prochrobert (RIP), @telmomiel, @nataliarakart, @inoexpo, @sprayithero, @hupsisukkonen, @badseeds_osek, @deostmf and @charlesliquor

Unnamed, Espoo Finland 2022, artist Antti Nordin, 18 m x 1,6 m x 0,4 m, stainless steel, industrial grade coating.

Antti Nordin @anttinordin held his first solo exhibition in 1984 and was a board member at Association of Finnish Sculptors between 1987 and 1988. Nordin has several artworks in public and private collections, and he has created several large-scale public installations around Finland.

Nordin is a multidisciplinary artist working in various fields of art including sculpture, painting, music, and song writing. He has 40 years of experience in visual arts and 15 years of experience in workshops for children and young people in visual arts and music.

In sculpting mainly working with stone, steel, and bronze, Nordin’s abstract work can be described as fun and inviting to touch. By exploring the relation of negative and positive space, Nordin creates a dialogue between the two and the negative’s purpose comes prominent in the confinement of the positive.

Nordin’s latest public artwork in Espoo continues his fun and playful sculptural approach seen in his “Kaupunki liikkuu” (Moving City) installation in Imatra. The artwork has a function as a barrier on the property line, but at the same time it’s a splash of color that invites to touch, to sit on it and interact with it.

“Lumpeet 1 and 2” (“Water Lilies”), Turku Finland 2022, artist Santeri Tuori, 3,1 m x 9,5 m
and 2,2 m, printed façade glass, video controlled led mesh and powder coated steel.

Santeri Tuori @santerituori received his Master of Law in 1999, but quickly decided to pursue his passion in arts and received his Master of Arts in 2003.

Mainly working with still photography and video, Tuori’s work is often described as elegant and
captivating to the senses. Tuori is fascinated with the passage of time and introduces it to his art by repeatedly photographing the same location from the same position during
several seasons and years. Layering the images one on top of one another, Tuori creates
own unique compositions of "time being”.

With his latest public work “Lumpeet 1 and 2”, Tuori continues this by creating a multi-layered work that also blurs the traditional line between still image and video. The observer
can see the surface of the water and the plants, reflections of the surroundings and the sky,
but by focusing deeper into the artwork, new worlds start to appear. Movement of the water and the plants become prominent and feel like small raindrops on the surface, or
mysterious life beneath it, creating a mesmerizing and soothing experience that you could watch for hours.

Designed by SIGGE-architects, the building “Tyyssija” won an architecture contest in 2017
with its Innovative and unique architecture.
